What is Cataract?

Cataract is a prevalent eye condition, often linked to aging, where the natural lens of the eye becomes clouded. Cataracts block light from passing through the lens, making it difficult for a person to see clearly.

This can lead to several noticeable symptoms, including:

  • Blurry or foggy vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Perception of “halos” around lights
  • Faded or dull colors

If cataracts go untreated, they can progressively worsen, eventually leading to significant loss of vision.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Moradi to explore your treatment options.

Our Cataract Surgery Procedure

Cataract surgery is one of the most common, safe, and effective surgical procedures performed today. During the surgery, your cloudy lens is gently removed and replaced with an artificial lens allowing you to regain clear vision.

The procedure typically takes less than 20 minutes, is performed under topical anesthesia, and most patients experience little to no discomfort.

Discover more about the journey of cataract surgery, from the steps you'll take to prepare, to the details of the procedure itself, and what you can anticipate during the recovery process.

Your journey to clearer vision begins with a comprehensive cataract consultation. During this appointment, our experienced ophthalmologist will evaluate your eye health, assess the severity of your cataracts, and discuss your vision goals. We’ll answer any questions you may have and explain the surgery in detail, including the benefits, potential risks, and what you can expect before, during, and after the procedure. This is also when we’ll discuss your intraocular lens options to determine which type best fits your lifestyle and vision needs.

As you plan for your cataract surgery, keep in mind that your comfort and safety are our top priorities.

While your eyes will be sensitive to light post-procedure, bringing along a pair of sunglasses for the ride home can help protect your eyes and make your journey more comfortable. Also, it’s best to avoid wearing any eye makeup on the day of your surgery to minimize the risk of infection.

After the procedure, to ensure your safety, we recommend arranging for a loved one, friend, or caregiver to accompany you to the surgery and assist you in getting home.

Driving isn’t advisable immediately after your surgery, so having a reliable, alternate transportation plan in place is essential.

Remember, we’re here to support you every step of the way. If you have any questions or concerns about preparing for your surgery, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 949-270-6063.

On the day of your surgery, you’ll be given a topical anesthetic to numb your eye, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure.

Using advanced, ultra-precise technology, your surgeon will make a small incision in your eye to access the cloudy lens. The cataract is then gently broken up and removed. Once the cataract is removed, your surgeon will insert the new, clear artificial lens. The procedure typically takes 15-20 minutes, and in most cases, no stitches are required due to the small size of the incision.

Immediately after the surgery, you’ll rest in our recovery room for a short while as the anesthesia wears off. You may experience some blurry vision and slight discomfort as your eye starts to heal and adjust to the new lens. Don’t worry – this is completely normal. To protect your eye, we’ll provide a protective shield or eyewear for you to wear during your initial recovery period.

Recovery from cataract surgery is typically straightforward and swift. Many patients notice an improvement in their vision right after the surgery.

We’ll provide you with medicated eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation, and to help your eye heal.

For a few weeks following the surgery, you’ll need to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and swimming.

You’ll have several post-operative appointments so we can monitor your recovery, and of course, our team is always here to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have during your healing process.

At Eyeconic, we’re with you every step of the way on your journey to clearer, brighter vision.

Understanding the Potential Complications of Cataract Surgery

Rest assured, complications from cataract surgery are rare. Nonetheless, as with any surgical procedure, it’s important to be informed about potential risks.

One of the most frequently observed complications is Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO). PCO can cause your vision to become cloudy, a result of a thin layer of cells growing over the lens capsule that holds your new artificial lens in place.

However, there’s good news. PCO is easily manageable with a swift, pain-free procedure known as YAG laser treatment. Here at Eyeconic,we offer this treatment to our patients. The process is straightforward and designed to rapidly restore clarity to your vision.

Your eye health and peace of mind are paramount to us. We are committed to providing you with all the necessary information and care you need throughout your journey towards better vision. As always, our team is ready to answer any questions or concerns you may have about cataract surgery or its potential complications.
